A bright, sunny university campus quad featuring a diverse group of college students. In the foreground, a smiling young woman with a laptop and backpack holds up a tablet displaying "Higher Education Blog." In the background, other students are seated at a table studying together and walking along a tree-lined path toward classic brick campus buildings.

So, are we actually going to pretend that a glorified autocorrect is about to put the higher ed research out of business?

For months, I have watched the corporate world convince itself that generative AI is a one-for-one replacement for the kind of innovative inquiry we do in higher education. I just finished a project where a company threw millions at a 90% AI automation strategy. They expected a miracle of efficiency. Instead, they drove the brand straight into a wall because they confused “processing data” with the type of value created by higher ed research.

The Iteration Trap vs Higher Ed Research

The results were a disaster. First came the total collapse of differentiation. Because AI models optimize for the statistical mean, the company ended up sounding exactly like every one of its competitors. Their customers noticed immediately. In a world where everyone uses the same tools to recycle the same ideas, you aren’t an innovator. You are a commodity. This is where the depth of higher ed research provides a lifeline. While AI looks for the average, scholars look for the exception.

Expertise Decay and the Credibility Gap

Then came the expertise decay. Sales reps used AI to “play” expert by using a confident tone to mask a lack of actual knowledge. But AI doesn’t know facts; it predicts sequences. This led to high-confidence hallucinations and misinformation that stripped the brand of its credibility. Prospective customers walked away because they couldn’t get a straight answer. Recent clients didn’t renew because the product failed to meet real-world expectations. They lacked the rigorous verification that is standard in higher ed research.

Why Higher Ed Research Outlasts Mimicry

This is exactly why the mission of higher ed research is more secure than the doomsayers suggest. AI is an engine of iteration. It is great at rearranging the furniture of the past. But it cannot perform the rigorous inquiry that defines a university. True value comes from the discovery of new ideas, not the sophisticated recycling of old ones.

The Future of the Originality Premium

We are entering an era where originality is the scarcest resource on the planet. If everyone has access to the same iterative tools, the only thing that separates a leader from the pack is the ability to find a truth that hasn’t been indexed yet. This level of discovery is the primary output of higher ed research.

AI can mimic the voice of an expert, but it cannot do the labor of one. The world is about to find out just how much it needs the “messy middle” of human discovery. If we want to move beyond a world of mirrored mediocrity, we have to double down on the unique, non-iterative power of higher ed research.
